R-454B Refrigerant
R-454B is a newer refrigerant with a substantially lower global warming potential than the R-410A refrigerant it's replacing in new residential air conditioners and heat pumps sold across North America. It requires different handling, tools, and safety procedures than older refrigerants.

Do I need to replace a working R-410A system just because of the refrigerant change?
No — existing R-410A systems remain legal to operate and service; the transition affects newly manufactured equipment, not systems already installed. If your current system is working and can still be serviced, there's no requirement to replace it early because of the refrigerant change alone.
Does R-454B affect installation or repair costs?
It can, at least during the transition — R-454B is mildly flammable (A2L classification), which requires different handling procedures, leak detection, and technician certification than R-410A. Confirm your installer is properly trained and equipped for it before scheduling work on new equipment.
