ECM Motor (Electronically Commutated Motor)

An ECM motor is a variable-speed, electronically controlled blower motor used in furnaces and air handlers, replacing older single-speed PSC motors. It can run at low, efficient speeds for continuous airflow and ramp up only when needed, rather than only ever running at one fixed speed.

An ECM blower typically uses less electricity than an older single-speed motor, especially when set to run continuously for even air circulation, and tends to be quieter — though it's usually paired with two-stage or modulating equipment rather than sold entirely on its own.

With Ontario's time-of-use hydro pricing, a lower-wattage ECM blower running longer at a low speed can cost less over a billing cycle than a cheaper high-wattage motor that cycles on and off at full power.
